How many ambulatory surgery centers are in the US?
14,030, counted state by state.
There are 14,030 ambulatory surgery centers in the US by our current count, spread across 55 states and territories. Every figure on this page is computed from the same point-in-time snapshot that powers DataLily's free ASC directory — not quoted from an analyst report.
The national count, and what stands behind it.
Our snapshot holds 14,030 ambulatory surgery centers across 55 US states and territories, each with its own profile in the ASC directory. Facility counts are the most concrete way to size the ASC industry: revenue estimates vary widely depending on whether they count facility fees only, or professional fees, anesthesia, and implants alongside them.
Of those centers, 5,110 matched to a Medicare certification number (CCN) when the snapshot was built. Read that as "certified in our data", not a census of certification — a center that did not match a CCN is not necessarily uncertified.
If you have seen a much smaller figure elsewhere — MedPAC reports roughly 6,300 Medicare-certified ASCs — the difference is scope, not disagreement. That figure counts only centers certified by Medicare; our snapshot is broader, including centers identified from facility and provider records regardless of Medicare certification status.

Which states have the most surgery centers.
California leads with 2,367 centers — 16.9% of the national count — followed by Texas (1,829) and Florida (968). Concentration tracks population, but not perfectly: state certificate-of-need rules materially change how many centers a market supports, which is why some large states sit lower than their population would suggest. The full ranking, with every state's centers listed, lives in the state-by-state directory.

What those centers actually perform.
Among the 5,175 centers where a procedure mix can be established from facility-fee evidence, the largest specialty families are ophthalmology, pain management, gastroenterology, and orthopedics — which is why the ASC market is often described as a cataract, injection, endoscopy, and joint business. Two caveats keep this honest: the denominator is the evidence-backed subset, not all 14,030 centers, and a center performing both eye and GI cases counts in both families.

Where these numbers come from.
Every figure on this page is computed at build time from a point-in-time snapshot of US ambulatory surgery centers — the same dataset that renders the ASC directory and the ASC market & industry hub, so this post can never drift from the profiles it summarizes. A snapshot supports counts and distribution; it does not support growth rates, CAGRs, or year-over-year claims, so you will not find any here.
