What is genetic engineering?

Genetic engineering is the deliberate use of laboratory techniques to modify an organism's DNA by adding, removing, or altering specific genes. The result is an organism, cell, or biological system whose genetic makeup has been intentionally changed for a defined purpose.

In healthcare, genetic engineering underlies the production of many biologic medicines, the creation of engineered cell therapies, and the development of research models used to study disease. It provides the toolkit that makes much of modern biotechnology possible.

Why is genetic engineering important in healthcare?

Genetic engineering enables therapies and products that would otherwise be impossible to manufacture, from recombinant proteins to cell therapies tailored to a patient. Its therapeutic potential is broad and continues to expand as techniques mature.
