Genomic Sequencing

What is genomic sequencing?

Genomic sequencing is the laboratory process of determining the order of DNA bases across part or all of an organism's genome. Depending on the scope, it can examine a targeted set of genes, the protein-coding regions, or the entire genome.

In medicine, sequencing supports diagnosis of rare disorders, profiling of tumors to guide targeted therapy, and pharmacogenomic analysis of how patients metabolize drugs. Each application turns raw sequence data into clinically meaningful information.

Why does genomic sequencing matter for health data and IT?

Genomic sequencing produces very large, complex datasets that require specialized pipelines for analysis, interpretation, and secure storage. Managing this data demands computing resources and informatics expertise well beyond typical clinical records.

Because results can carry sensitive and long-lasting implications for patients and their relatives, sequencing data also raises heightened privacy, governance, and integration challenges. Handling it well is as much a data-infrastructure problem as a clinical one.
