Fracture

A break or crack in a bone, ranging from hairline stress fractures to displaced or comminuted breaks. Treatment spans casting, reduction, and surgical fixation; many uncomplicated repairs and hardware procedures are now performed in ambulatory surgery centers under orthopedic specialties.

What is a fracture?

A fracture is a break or crack in a bone, ranging from a thin hairline stress fracture to a fully displaced break where the bone ends separate. A comminuted fracture, in which the bone shatters into multiple fragments, is among the more severe forms.

Treatment depends on the type and location of the break and may involve immobilization with a cast, realignment of the bone through reduction, or surgical fixation with hardware such as plates, screws, or rods. The goal is to restore proper alignment so the bone can heal and function returns.

How are fractures treated in an ASC?

Many uncomplicated fracture repairs and related hardware procedures are now performed in ambulatory surgery centers under orthopedic specialties. Advances in surgical technique and anesthesia have made it feasible to fix and discharge appropriate patients the same day.

For an ASC, these orthopedic cases represent a meaningful service line, and accurate documentation of the fracture type and the fixation performed drives correct coding and reimbursement. Selecting suitable, lower-complexity cases is what keeps these procedures safe and viable in the outpatient setting.
