What is high-throughput screening?

High-throughput screening is an automated laboratory approach in drug discovery that rapidly tests very large numbers of chemical compounds against a biological target. Using robotics, miniaturized assay plates, and automated detection, a screening campaign can evaluate thousands to millions of compounds in a compressed timeframe.

The goal is to identify a small set of promising molecules, often called hits, that interact with the target in a desired way and merit deeper investigation. It is an early-stage filtering step that narrows an enormous chemical space down to a manageable number of candidates.

Why is high-throughput screening important in drug discovery?

Discovering a viable drug candidate from the vast universe of possible compounds would be impractical by manual testing, so the scale and speed of high-throughput screening are what make modern early discovery feasible. By quickly separating promising compounds from inactive ones, it focuses scarce experimental resources where they are most likely to pay off.

This is a life-sciences and pharmaceutical research method, distinct from clinical or facility operations. Its value lies in accelerating the front end of the drug development pipeline, long before any resulting therapy reaches a patient or a care setting.
