Nuclear medicine is a medical specialty that uses small, controlled amounts of radioactive material, called radiotracers, to diagnose and treat disease. By tracking how these tracers move and concentrate in the body, it reveals how organs and tissues are functioning rather than just their structure.

Diagnostic techniques such as positron emission tomography and single-photon emission computed tomography image processes like blood flow, metabolism, and cellular activity. The specialty also delivers targeted radiotherapy, for example treating certain thyroid disorders and cancers with radioactive agents.

Why is nuclear medicine valuable in healthcare?

Nuclear medicine provides functional information that complements anatomic imaging, often detecting disease activity earlier or more precisely than structural scans alone. This makes it important in oncology, cardiology, and endocrinology, among other fields.

The handling of radioactive materials requires specialized facilities, licensing, and safety controls, so nuclear medicine is generally based in hospitals and dedicated imaging centers. It falls outside the typical scope of an ambulatory surgery center, though its diagnostic findings may inform surgical planning.
