E-Prescribing/Electronic Prescribing

E-prescribing, or electronic prescribing, is the digital creation and transmission of medication orders directly from a clinician to a pharmacy. It reduces handwriting errors, supports interaction checking, and speeds fulfillment, improving safety and convenience compared with paper prescriptions.

What is e-prescribing?

E-prescribing, or electronic prescribing, is the digital generation and transmission of a medication order directly from a clinician's system to a pharmacy. It replaces handwritten or faxed prescriptions with a structured electronic message.

Many e-prescribing systems also check for drug interactions and allergies as the order is created, adding a layer of safety before the prescription ever reaches the pharmacy.

Why is electronic prescribing important?

By eliminating illegible handwriting and manual re-entry, e-prescribing reduces a common source of medication errors and speeds the path from order to fulfillment. Patients often find their prescriptions ready sooner and with fewer mix-ups.

The built-in safety checks and clearer records also support better coordination among prescribers, pharmacists, and patients across care settings.
