Tele-triage

The remote assessment and prioritization of patients by phone or video to determine urgency and direct them to the appropriate level of care. It helps manage demand, reduce unnecessary visits, and route patients efficiently before in-person encounters.

What is tele-triage?

Tele-triage is the remote assessment and prioritization of patients by phone or video to determine how urgent their needs are and where they should be directed. A nurse or trained clinician gathers symptoms and history to decide whether a patient needs emergency care, an in-person visit, a virtual encounter, or self-care guidance.

It applies clinical protocols to sort patients quickly without an initial in-person evaluation. The output is a recommendation about the right level and timing of care.

Why is tele-triage useful?

Tele-triage helps manage demand by steering patients to the appropriate setting, reducing unnecessary emergency department visits and easing pressure on clinical schedules. It can also catch urgent problems early and accelerate access for patients who truly need to be seen.

By routing patients efficiently before they arrive, it improves both patient experience and resource use. For surgical practices, well-run triage can screen pre- and post-procedure concerns and decide which warrant an in-person evaluation.
